Exploring the Intersection of Migration, Global Integration and Gender Diversity

A magazine feature on how migration policies should incorporate gender-sensitive approaches, the labour realities migrant women face, and tailored support services for vulnerable groups in countries of origin and destination.

Migration can both challenge and reinforce existing gender norms. Borders can exacerbate vulnerabilities, making it essential to incorporate gender-sensitive approaches into migration policies. Without gender awareness in policy, migration risks deepening inequalities rather than offering opportunities for advancement.

Women often migrate to work in domestic labour, caregiving or the informal economy. These gendered labour divisions can reinforce existing inequalities — particularly when access to legal protection, fair pay or transportation is lacking. Gender diversity in migration is a dynamic and evolving field that requires the active participation of migrant-led organisations working on gender justice.

Governments and partners should design tailored support services for LGBTQ+ migrants, survivors of gender-based violence and single mothers, including access to shelters, legal aid and protection from exploitation, abuse and discrimination — in both countries of origin and destination.

For SBMC and the wider SOBA family — whose members live and work across multiple continents — this conversation matters. As Sobans we owe it to the next generation to advocate for policies that protect the most vulnerable, and to be active partners in shaping a more equitable global migration landscape.
