Vox-Pop — Voices from the SBMC Family

Coordinated by Chapter Secretary Breeze Monono, the Vox-Pop section gathers reflections from Sobanese Martina Agbortambe and Soban Fonsa Kiwanuka Pires on their years in the chapter, the activities they treasure, and their advice to the next generation.

On joining SBMC and the importance of a jubilee: "I joined the SBMC through my husband in 1982. The importance of a jubilee cannot be overemphasized as it is a time of jubilation, reflection on the past, evaluation of the present and planning for the future. It is a good time to see how far we have come as a chapter."

On chapter activities she enjoys: "I used to like the hosting model that rotated from one member's home to another every month. I was also a great fan of the lectures on selected themes during monthly meetings. I like the bonding and solidarity that holds the SBMC together and especially the meticulous and transparent handling of the financial records of the chapter."

On most memorable moments: "My most memorable moment in SBMC is the tenure of Professor Alexander Asong as the Chapter President. We used to have great moments and family discussions. The SBMC was the backbone of all SOBA events on Sasse College campus."

Advice to future generations: "Always stay close to the elders of the chapter in order to learn wisdom and patience. 'What an old man sees sitting on the ground cannot be seen by a young man perched on a tree.' Collaboration is also a key to success — slow and steady always wins the race."

"Being part of the SBMC has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. For more than a decade this community has shaped my character, strengthened my values and taught me the true meaning of brotherhood. In my early years, during the Presidency of Prof. Egbewatt and later Dr. John Chuwanga (RIP), senior members showed us what true leadership and generosity look like. Their acts of kindness — such as paying our membership dues — taught me the importance of lifting others to rise."

"Through the SBMC I learnt that growth happens when you step forward, participate and take responsibility. Each gathering became a classroom of life where respect, discipline and teamwork guided every discussion. From birthday celebrations organised by Ma' Ngongi and Sobanese Emma Lebaga to words of encouragement from members before my journey abroad, their support reminded me that true brotherhood knows no distance. Under Barrister Kameni's visionary leadership and with insights from mentors like Prof. Molua Ernest, I learned that collaboration and mutual promotion can turn small ideas into lasting ventures."
